Toilet Handle

I have to hold down the handle in order to flush. How can I fix this?

Re: Toilet Handle

Most likely, the chain from your handle to the flapper is a bit too long. Try to shorten it, and see if it helps.

Caution: shorten too much, the flapper won't be able to drop.

Please report back.

You have too much slack in the chain between the handle and the flapper. Try adjusting the chain, if that doesn't work then replace the flapper.

John,

Unintentionally...

Could also be a problem with a waterlogged flapper counterbalance. There is usually some mechanism that helps the flapper float until the water all leaves the tank. Sometimes a buoyant float, sometimes just the bubble of air inside the flapper.

If shortening the chain doesn't work, let us know what type of flapper you have.

That is, IF he comes back. You know kids these days.... they never call.

If you have a unit with a Styrofoam float on the chain, you remove the disk retainer above and below the float and move the float down the chain. I would try about ¼" at a time.
