Stippling drywall compound is an excellent way to match paint textures, I've done it many times to patch work to simulate surrounding areas prior to painting. The key is to not be afraid to experiment with your applicator because the compound reacts differently to different materials and material textures. I've used wadded up newspaper, plastic bags, sponges of varying cell size and configuration, and cleaning rags. The easiest way to mimic roller marks is to use a paint roller, the trick here is that once the compound has dried, you wipe it carefully and gently with a damp sponge or rag to soften the texture "points" before painting.
