Tile Boards for Prelayout?

Hello All,
So i removed the maple flooring out of my 1880's house and i found this under a section of it. It looks like they used it to level the maple flooring when they laid it. Any idea what it is or what it might have been originally used for? I google searched for something like it and could find anything...

Re: Tile Boards for Prelayout?

I'm guessing it's linoleum, either printed or inlaid. My vote is for printed in this case; inlaid breaks along the seams, this seems to have torn.

Re: Tile Boards for Prelayout?

looks like very early linoleum to me

Re: Tile Boards for Prelayout?

ditto here, ive come across this stuff many times

even worse, 3 layers of it in the back room of my house when i bought it and renovated

Ha linoleum, I bet that is what it is. By the looks of it, it looks like the coloring was painted on it. You can see the brush strokes on it. Thanks all for your info on this one. I've never seen anything like it.
