sump pump unable to keep up with heavy rain

After a heavy rainfall Three inches in a few hours
the water was coming up between the slab and walls
the down spouts run away from the house the sump just could not keep up
Is it possible to install an additional pump to handle the demand of a rainfall like that?
Want to finish the basement but afraid of heavy rain like that the house is 8 years old

What size is your pump? Just knowing the pump capacity of my sump pump and how fast it drains the crock, I am guessing your pump can be replaced with a larger pump that can keep up with the water. I'll check mine in a little bit and report back with the size I hae and the line size coming out of the basement.
