subfloor from kitchen extends into living room

after tearing out carpet to redo hardwood floor noticed subfloor from kitchen extends about an inch into living room where i want to redo the hardwood floor. any ideas on what i should do about this?

Yup! That's what I'd do. Another solution would be to have a flooring specialist replace that strip of underlayment with a strip of hardwood, though I would say that this is only an option if you'll be having other floor repairs done as well, due to expense. The fastest and easiest thing will be to use a transition strip as mentioned.
