Subfloor in basement or not, before laying ceramic tile

We are finishing our basement and are wanting to put ceramic tile down for the floor covering. Can we just put the ceramic tile on the concrete itself or should I put down a subfloor

Thanks MLB,

You can tile directly to the ceement slab. There are some things to look for;

1- How long will the longest run of tile be in any one direction?
2- Are there any cracks with vertical displacement?
3- If you spill some water onto the slab, will it soak in in 20 minutes or set on top and evaporate? (test in several areas)
4- Do you currently have moisture problems?
5- Are there any tooled joints in the slab already?
6- Are there any supporting columns which will be surrounded by tile?

You can find tons of answers over at the John Bridge Tile forum where they have an extensive library. Start a thread of your own so you can post pictures and get answers tailored to your specific home.

Pretty cool huh? Tell them we sent you and that they are late on last month's referral check. ;)
