Stopping heat from baseboard radiator?

Hi,

I live in a small (~750sqft) single story house with hot water heat and baseboard radiators. The entire 1st floor is one zone, and I believe all the radiators are connected in one circuit. Without going to the expense of having additional zones put in to control the heat in different rooms I would like to be able to keep my bedroom cooler than the rest of the house.

I did recently clean the radiators and try to get the covers to fit well so I could close the vent (or maybe flap is a better term) near the top to close off the air flow. It didn't seem to help, the whole surface of the radiator cover gets pretty warm (this room is the 1st on the loop).

What are my options for controlling the heat to this one room?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,

Unless you install a bypass for that specific rad, you can't stop the hot water from going through and making the rad warm.

What you can do is insulate the pipe inside the rad to cut off the air flow and reduce the radiant heat from escaping.

Thanks. Since the 2nd suggestion is the simplest, let me start with that. I think there are several feet of pipe without fins, so that would be fairly simple to insulate, but I wasn't sure how much good it would do alone. I did find a suggestion somewhere else to pull the fins off the pipe where heat wasn't wanted (for a different problem) but I don't want to do irreversible damage to the radiator. Is there a suggested method to insulating along the fins? I guess I could just stuff it with narrow strips of fiberglass insulation.

Thanks,
Jon

Start with stuffing the area around the fins with insulation. Choke off as much of the air flow as possible.
