Standard size for laminate countertop?
osilsby

We have a basement apartment and are replacing countertops before renting out. Its a galley kitchen and the depths of the cabs are different. Both are standard, but about 3 inches different. Does anyone know if the premade laminate countertops come in different depths?

Also, is is possible to cut off the backsplash?

Thanks.

typically laminate counters are 24" with the backsplash, as the base cabinet is 23" to allow for a 1" nosing

???

Yes post-form laminate countertops are available in different configurations and sizes.

Vanity depth and kitchen countertop depth and extended depths plus bars.

With or without backsplashes or bar-style.

Flush edge, waterfall, euro style, double waterfall are the most common.

Standard kitchen countertop depths including backsplash usually 25-1/4 to 25-1/2" including nosing.

Vanities usually about 22-1/4" with backsplash and nose.

Extended usualy at 30, 36 and 42.

Stock usually in 8, 10 & 12' lengths.

Where are you located?

Thanks for the feedback. We are in Washington, DC. Maybe we can use a vanity size top on one side and a regular kitchen cabinet top on the other. I am only familiar with Home Depot and Lowes selling the preformed countertops. They seem to only have the variety with the backsplash attached. What kind of retailer should I contact about the countertop without the backsplash?

Without backsplash would definitely be our preference and we would then do tile above. Anything special we need to know about attaching tile above a preformed countertop that would be different than a custom countertop?

Huge thank you for all advice.

The common sizes that the box stores have are for 24 inch kitchen counters and 22 and 19 inch for bathrooms, usually they have the back splash.
The good thing is the box stores aren't the only places to get countertops. Look in the phone book for places that sell or fabricate countertops , they can supply you with whatever you need or want.

VT Industries supplies both Home Depot and Lowes (at Lowes they sell under a branded name "Belanger"). You can order and receive in 2 days to 2 weeks.

VT Industries also supplies Sutherlands home stores (for our friends further west).

You'll find you can get post-form countertops with backsplashes of differing types or without backsplashes (straight), bar style tops, a variety of nosing details and different backsplash styles as I mentioned. The pdf specifications drawings show dimmensions and detail.

http://www.vtindustries.com/countertops/ then visit the cabinets and countertops desk at your local home store.

Standard kitchen base cabinets are usually 24" deep. You add the depth of overlay doors and drawer fronts. Your countertops should be deeper than the face fronts of your doors and drawers. Finished edges and underside for drip edge are nice in the kitchen. If you're getting cabinets from IKEA or other metric then measurements might be different.

Thing is cabinets might be shimmed out from the wall and you want your countertop to go to the wall so you might need to get it deeper and scribe it to fit and still keep the face straight.

I used a belt sander it was messy.

I also used metal tiles and trim edge ordered on line.

another option is to go over the existing countertops. I've done this and it wasn't that bad. I gave the existing laminate a quick sanding first...

I agree with Pete and will only add a buck three eighty for what that is worth. Just make sure they remain deep enough to hold a Thanksgiving Turkey or a large Pizza, unless, a medium Pizza is ordered on Thanksgiving........ Could be, you never know.

your cheapest bet is to look in the yellow pages under cabinet equip and supplies and go directly to them and they will be able to cut them down to what ever depth you need. or you can cut them down yourself with a good circular saw. just remember to turn the top upside down and cut from the bottom side to reduce chipping and make sure you have a good blade on.
