Just what dimension of lumber should i use to cut a 12 inch tread?

stair treads are usually a true 1" thick. after that it depends on the depth and the width of the tread. but naturally you have to see what the other treads are so that you can match the material and dimensions

what he said.. youll find 1 1/2 " thick treads in really old homes.. 100 yrs plus. but 1" is the standard thickness nowadays

Interesting, the treads on my stairwell are 1 1/2" in my 1900ish house, but my building inspector felt my staircase was built only 50 or 60 years ago. House was built as a 1 story, but I have no idea what the original floorplan was . . . and I might be threadjacking. Sorry

i see it regularly on service stairs to unfinished basements in homes from the 40's and 50's also
