stair carpet runner continuing onto the landing

Your stair runner installation guide is clear enough, but it says to cut the runner below the molding or nose of the top step and then to glue the edges to prevent unraveling. What if I have an oriental runner and I want to continue it onto the stair landing? How should I secure the carpet on the landing, or should it just rest on the pad there like any other floor carpet? Should I staple it through the pad there or would that result in damage?
