Squirrels. Squirrels, Squirrels.

My front and back yard lawns are being destroyed by squirrels.
no other lawn in the neighborhood like mine.
I have no trees for at least 25 years, but they dig, dig, dig.
IS THERE ANYTHING TO KEEK THEM AWAY? New Jersey.

Bergen,

May seem like a dumb question, but.......
are you sure that the diggers are squirrels? (you see them doing this).....or are you presuming the culprits are squirrels? (squirrels are prevalent, but the digging actually happens at night while you're asleep)

Reason I ask is because there was a rash of lawn digging problems last fall around this locale and the actual culprits were raccoons. They were digging for grubs and tore many the lawn to bits. Never saw the likes of it around here before. Looked as if bears had come during the night. Quickest resolution to a grub problem is to apply a granular insecticide for grub eradication to the lawn (at the appropriate time, of course) and get it promptly watered in. No grubs, no digging for them.

Voles will also dig up lawns under the snow during the winter months looking for chow.

Just a thought.

Not sure if squirrels will dig for grubs or not.
