Smooth Coating for deck

I am a new homeowner and have what might be a dumb question. My new house has a deck around a pool that definately needs to be addressed. The wood was gray and had some real rough spots. I bought some cleaner that I sprayed on and it make a huge difference in the apperance. I then sanded the deck using a random orbit sander as well as I could and I'm now using a stain/sealer to make the surface look much nicer. The problem is that even with the sanding, there are rough spots on the deck. With it being around the pool, there will be bare feet on the deck and I want to minimize the risk of splinters. Is there any product I can use that will fill in the grain and give me a smooth surface? I'm visualizing some like of plasticizer or urethane, but I need guidance. Please help!
