We have a brick sidewalk that runs along the side of our house. We are located in northern Illinois. It was installed several years ago. The installer placed the bricks right up against the side of the house. We are wondering if there should have been a space left between the house and the beginning of the bricks i.e., crushed rock, stones). This section of the house is over a crawl space, and we have noticed a damp odor in the bathroom which is located above the floor of the crawl space. The crawl space walls have been insulated. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Sidewalk

From what you described, your problem is not the bricks. This problem would have appeared with crushed rock or any other surface as well.

You need to locate the leak and treat the problem right there.

Re: Sidewalk

Thank you for your response. When the sidewalk was installed, we had a drain put into the flower bed adjacent to the sidewalk to collect any excess moisture from the property next to us. That drain empties out into our yard. We thought that the moisture issue that we are experiencing may have been from the bricks being right up against the house. We will investigate further. Thanks for your help.
