Shower surround flange

I just installed a new bathtub and surround in my bathroom. The tub and surround are attached directly to the studs. How do I attach the greenboard, up to the flange of the surround and tub or over it? I have heard both ways. Since I want to tile above and around, is it easier to do it one way over the other?

I was wanting to tile the remaining 18" above the shower surround and down the surround edge to hide the flange. Can you tile directly to greenboard or does it need to be cement board? I'm not tiling IN the shower, just outside and above the surround.
