shower shelf replacement

I have a broken corner shelf in a shower that I have to remove and replace. I can cut it out with a roro-zip tile saw, but would like some advise on how to re-attach its replacement.
Should this be attached with tile mastic? I've heard of some contractors using grout instead. There are large holes in the back of the piece. Should a stub be attached coming off the interior wall through a hole for supportor, or are the there for the cement to adhere to?
