Shower renew

The house we purchased has a shower stall made of large slabs of smooth tile. One wall has a crack and the caulk is stained and discolored. I would like to get all of the replaced but do not know how to go about finding someone to do the work. What type of contractor does this work? What type of qualifications should they have? We are new to this area and do have our contacts built up yet.

There are a few good leads, even when you are new to an area. But the best sources are:
- ask neighbors for refernces, then check the refernces.
- inquire at kitchen and bath shops, outlets, suppliers in the area, then again, check the recommended contractors.
- try to avoid newspaper ads, BBB leads, commercials, bait and switch and too good to be true offers.
- granite and marble fabricators.
- tile shops.
and more.

Who can handle your specific job? kitchen and bath contractors, remodelers, even skilled handymen.

Good luck.

Re: Shower renew

Use only 100% silicone for the inside corners and changes of plane in your shower / tub areas. Not the 'siliconized latex, but real, 100%, made from the best petrochemicals stuff from the good old USofA. If any contractor tells you latex is good, then show him the door. Latex will start molding the very first time it gets wet. Properly applied silicone can last a few dozen years.

There is an excellent tile forum called the 'John Bridge Tile Forum" You can find answers for anything tile related, as well as a number of every qualified contractors who frequent the site. The regular contributing members are from the US mostly, with a few from Kuwait, New Zealand, Costa Rica and up north in Canada.

Pcbcheri:

You said: "One wall has a crack and the caulk is stained and discolored."

If by "stained and discoloured" you mean that there's mildew growing on the silicone caulk, you should be aware that this can be cleaned off.

Post again if you want to know how to clean mildew off silicone caulk yourself.
