Shower drain leaking - why?

I noticed that our shower drain is leaking, dripping onto the floor in our basement. I'm sure it wasn't leaking when we moved into the house, when it was about 7 years old. It's been about 3 years, and the leak is very minimal. My question has two parts. Is it likely that the drip is happening because my husband is quite a big man, ranging between 250-300 lbs and this is stressing the drain somehow? Is a very slow leak like this something that we need to worry about and fix right away?

Unless the shower floor was set improperly and is flexing 300 lbs shouldn't be a problem. Drain seals, traps and pipes can wear out or loosen. Yes, you should try to get it fixed before it becomes a big problem.

the reason it leaks is becuase you use the shower!!! just kidding.

as stated your husbands weight should not have anything to do with, as long as you do not decide to shower with him at the same time!!

anyway,

just call a plumber and have them reseal and fix it before the drips starts mold etc. and leaks bigger

This is exactly my problem - in 2 separate showers. Crappy builder took shortcuts on the showers (as well as other places - 4 doors were hung out of plumb...) The people that bought it from him were small (like, 110-120 tops) and never stressed the showers. We, on the other hand, are not light, so I've got two showers to replace.

Are you sure it is the drain that is leaking and not the shower pan? If you are sure it is the drain what part of it is leaking?

In my case there is a very visible crack in the shower bottom around the drain once you remove the drain cover.

You should call a plumber and tell him all problem and fix it before the drips starts mold etc.

What type of shower are we talking about. I've seen fiberglass units flex and break the drain under the shower.

That is what mine is, but the crack is in the shower bottom itself about .125 to .25 inches out from the drain itself.

That usually happens when the pan is installed without proper support and the drain is attached to a rigid drain pipe.
