Should I use a sealer on old plaster?

I am repairing and painting the old plaster in my 1910 house in Wisconsin.  I have seen in a couple of articles I've read to use a plaster sealer.  Is this something I should do?  And, if so, where in the process should I use the sealer?  Before painting?  Thanks in advance for input!

Re: Should I use a sealer on old plaster?

I retired from the plastering trade after 40 years.

What are you using for the repair of the plaster if it is a lime based material you will have to let it dry than i would prime with an oil based primer.

Before you purchase the primer or paint check the lable and make sure it states for use over plaster. If you are useing joint compound ( which i don't like over plaster ) than follow the requirements for painting over joint compound.
