sewage/septic grinder problem

We had a septic grinder installed in our basement a few years ago. The kitchen sink and our washer ties into the septic grinder, which then pumps the waste water back up to the main sewage line. Periodically, every 8-10 months or so, it stops working because the float gets stuck. My husband has to open it up, find the flotation device, which has sunk to the bottom because of build up, and clean it. We treat it with a septic cleaner once a month, but it seems it is not enough. We are pretty conscientious about not putting too much down the garbage disposal, e.g., little grease/oil, etc. I was told once that rice is a culprit for the build up.
