Rotten window frames

While taking down wallpaper under a window in our dining room, we noticed that the plaster walls under the window would just flake right off. I took off the plaster, noticed that lathe was still pretty good in places, but the piece of wood under the window and on the side of the window are rotten (either termite damage, water damage, or both). How do you replace those pieces? Would we have to take out the entire double window? Help!! Thanks! Jen in Augusta

Re: Rotten window frames

If the window sill and the jambs are rotted, chances are you will need new boxes. On a lot of the older homes (late 1800's) the sills where almost flat rather than slopped. Water could then run in under the sashes and under the stoop causing this problem. It is usually best in these cases to have new boxes with proper slop on the sills and proper weather stripping installed.
