so I just thought of how to explain how two pieces of 1/4'' mesh overlapped make 1/8'' squares.
one piece of 1/4'' mesh has 4 squares per in so if you add two extra small squares per one of the 1/4'' squares you will have 1//8'' mesh.
I had to do the litter sifting bit when I first got my cats. Boy, was I ever glad when they got old enough to be "free range" day and night! Now they just use the wife's flowerbed.
They're not house cats, they live in the barn. But we did the responsible thing and had them sterilized and vaccinated.
One of these days I'm planning to build a trommel -- basically, a rotary drum to sift material -- to separate the fines from the compost pile, returning the bigger pieces to the pile for more composting. I'll probably use 1/2" mesh for that.
