Root system for Engligh Ivy

The front of my house is 2 1/2 levels of solid red brick. I want to plant English Ivy so it will grow and add some color to the front of the house. What kind of root system does English Ivy have? Does it need to be planted in the ground or can it be grown in a pot? I have a porch that runs the length of the front of the house.

Re: Root system for Engligh Ivy

I believe it can be planted straight in the ground. I have similar IVY on my porch, and this is what we did. It has been growing in quite nicely.
