Rock Foundation Leaks

Location: Adirondack Park in northern NY. During the fall and again in springtime during snow melt and rains the rock foundation of our 1920's Adirondack Park, lakeside home leaks badly through the basement walls (faced by crumbling cement block inside) and up from beneath the poorly sloped (to the sump pump) concrete floor. Some leaks flow like a spring from the walls, especially around the chimney and onto the oil burner furnace. We have a partial, french drain along one outside wall. We only have one section of roof(over the porch) that has gutters. The basement is only under about one third of the house (under 1/2 older section). Please make any suggestions you may have on the least expensive method of correcting these problems. THNX.

Grading to allow water draining away from the foundation along with gutters and down pipes directing water away are the simplest things to minimize water infiltration. However, these alone won't prevent water infiltration. Unfortunately the really only way of preventing water infiltration is at the source -- the exterior.
Excavating along the perimeter down to the footings -- install a drain system -- water proofing ( not damp proofing ) the exterior wall --- it's not cheap and invasive --- but --- is the prefered method .

Is it OK to dig down around a stone foundation? I heard if you disturb the packed soil around a stone foundation you can compromise everything. I have a house from the 1700's and the basement seeps like crazy. I just pump it all out.
