reusing broken brick pillars

I live in Florida. During one of the hurricanes, some decorative 7 foot old chicago brick pillars fell and broke into various levels (2 bricks high, 4 bricks high, etc.) Each level has 4 bricks around the outside with a space in the middle - sometimes filled with brick pieces or excess mortar. I want to use these bricks and rebuild the pillars by somehow cleaning off the mortar where it broke, lifting the sections back into place, and re-mortaring where the breaks were. Is it possible? How would you suggest that I clean off the areas...they are too big to put into buckets of acid water.

I have had the experience of salvaging bricks when my friend removed a 1970s style brick fireplace and used it for wall to hold back shrubs off our path. I also have them at the bottom of garden tubs. I once saved some from my old chimney and got it repurposed.

Normally to clean the bricks, you use a brick hammer to chip it off.

You would need to clean the bottom of one section and the top of the section you are going to lay in on. Then apply new mortar to the top of the bottom section and set the new section into place.

However, when you start chipping don't be surprised if more of the bricks come loose.
