Restoring Redwood Siding

We have beautiful vertical grain redwood siding on our house that was built in 1949. The redwood is beautiful, but needs to be restored to take out some of the mildew and water damage that has occurred on the past several years. I am wondering what is the best way to clean the brighten the wood and preserve it. I worry about pressure washing it and using stippers. I tested this once in a small section of the house and the strippers took out all of the tannens in the wood the pressure wash pealed off a lot of the wood. And, finally to preserve the wood once it has been cleaned is it better to use an oil based product with color or a product like Sikkens or something like Watco.

Please help. I really want to take care of this beautiful redwood home.
