replacing tub/shower faucets

My husband knows alot of general plumbing how-to's but has never replaced tub faucets and showerpipes. We're renovating the bath and would like to use a video unless it's as simple as buying the proper fittings. The faucets are apx. 50 years old, still work, don't leak, they just need updating to match the new sink faucets. Can anyone share info about this? I have scoured several TV and other diy videos, but those are very limited. Also what can we use to remove the years old residue and stain off the tub from the showerdoor frame we removed? thanx!
