Replacing newel post on old bottom stair

We ' re replacing all of the treads on an old staircase. Along with this we are replacing an old newel post. The newel post was installed on the floor and the stair was partially cut out. In fact the stringer was partially cut. So to the question. How would people recommend we do the replacement?  Get a solid newel then cut part of the bottom to find on the cut stringer?
