Replacing Entry Door Door Knob Located in the Center of the Door

My fiance and I have recently purchased a house and I'm having problems finding an answer to my question. Our front entry door has the door knob in the center of the door instead of on the right side like standard American homes. I would like to replace the door knob but I'm not sure if it's a special knob or if it's a standard knob. I'm hesitant about taking it apart to find out because if it is something special and I take it apart and it won't go back together I don't want to be stuck without a door knob. I would also like to know if anyone would know where to find the latch mechanism that goes inside the door. Obviously it's going to be longer or be a different setup than a regular door. It's not the main lock on the door, we have a deadbolt, but I would like to update the handle if possible. We don't want to replace the door because it's unique and quite the conversaton piece. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I've searched all over the place and only found pictures of these doors but no information on them.

Hi,
I found you a link to Yale locks PDF that has backsets available up to 42", but I suspect you'd be satisfied with an 18" backset cylindrical latch. This will give you part numbers, but you'd have to find a dealer, most likely a locksmith to order one.

Im with Casey,go see a locksmith. Ive only seen 4 or 5 locks like that in my lifetime.

How about taking a picture so we can see it

I've seen bolt extenders on Schlage handsets as well. Two places would be about to source something like this for you, one is a locksmith, choose a larger store/chain, they should have more resources. Second would be a specialty door hardware shop.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to try getting a hold of Yale and try talking to them, I already sent Schlage an email a couple of days ago. I'm also going to try to talk to one of the local window/door builders. I'll try and get a photo tonight if it's not to dark after work.
