Repairing a floor joist-Episode 1/5/13

On the show they suggested putting a piece of plywood on the side of the joist and said not to use "sheetrock" nails because they were too brittle and may break. I was wondering if you would get the same results from galvanized screws or if they were sufficient to connect the plywood to the joist?

I was a little curious about that one myself, though I agree with not using sheetrock screws, but what would be wrong with using the coated deck screws? They seem plenty strong enough.

I didn't see the show, but deck screws, galvanized nails (like long roofing nails) and galvanized screws are all good. Construction commons (10 or 16 penny) are good too for wood to wood.

Drywall nails and screws are not good for that.
