Removing Gutters Permanently

I'm restoring my 100-year-old house.

I should have prioritized gutter cleaning higher when we moved in 10 months ago, but just yesterday removed pine needles, etc. The gutters were completely full of needles, dirt, and growning plants.

In hindsight, this means we just went through a Boston winter with some of our heaviest snowfall with completely non-functioning gutters. We had no ground-heave and no basement water.

What if I removed gutters/downs altogether?

What other considerations are there? What should I do to the ground around the house to prevent trenches from being formed by the falling rainwater? Should I install snow guards for my asphalt roof?
