removing door knob w/deadbolt

I want to paint my front door and replace door knob and deadbolt. I got the outside part off where you insert the key, but I can't get the inside door knob to come out. Help! This is probably 40 years old.

Can you post a picture? What is the brand?

This is a guess, since there are many ways of attaching doorknobs:

Look on the shaft of the inside knob. There may be a tab sticking through the side of it, about 1/4" long. If you press this tab in toward the center of the shaft, you should be able to pull the knob off.

After you remove the knob, look on the side of the escutcheon (aka rose) for a slot just big enough to put a screwdriver in. Use this slot to pry off the escutcheon. Underneath, you should find a couple of screws which will allow you to remove the assembly.
