Refrigerator ice maker: ice smells and tastes bad
LetsGoBuffalo

We have had our refrigerator about 10 years now that dispenses water and makes ice. Everything was fine until three months ago when the ice started to smell and give off a nasty taste when it melted. The water has no smell nor does it taste bad.

Is there an explanation as to why just the ice would have these issues and not the water, since there is only one water line to the refrigerator so the two are sharing the same water source?

Our water comes from a well, and we also have a water softener and iron removal system which is hooked up at the house's water source.

This is a common issue, with all kinds of water sources.

- Your fridge has a water filter - have you changed it lately? Change it soon and you can also add an on line filter for double duty filtration system. Filters are only effective when they are not old.

- Some of the smell in many freezers comes from the plastic itself. Even new refrigerators smell. Get a box of baking soda, open the top and place in the freezer. See if it helps and change it periodically. There are other fridge deodorizers, but they may contain chemicals you may not want.

- Clean the ice holding container, see if the smell goes away.

- Call the fridge manufacturer for additional tips. If you find out a reliable way to get rid of odors, let us know.

One of the reasons I don't like ice makers. The other is they always seem to be breaking.
