refinishing redwood walls

Our house was built in 1960, single wall redwood construction in Hawaii. The interior redwood wall looks faded and is on the lighter side. I think the walls were finished with some sort of wax, but not sure. When we try to apply sealer to the wall, nothing happens. However, we took a chemical remover and it seems to work and remove whatever coating is on the surface (wood appears to be striped). My questions are what is the best way to refinish the redwood walls, i.e. sand wall or use a chemical striper? And once you’re done with that what should be applied to seal or stain the wood. I want it to look natural and want to protect the wood. Also something that will not take too much work or bad for our health.
