refinishing fir stairs

I live in a house built in 1920, the main living areas are oak floors, and I recently ripped the wall to wall carpet off the stairs, and they are fir, and it appears the two bedrooms upstairs are fir also under the wall to wall. The stairs were not in good condition. They had been painted over, and I have stripped all the paint off, and am left with steps that still show the beautiful red color on the sides and worn spots right in the middle from years of use.
Any advice on what to do now?
Sand and then stain? or is there a chance I can sand and just poly or sand and wax???

Thank you so much.

Re: refinishing fir stairs

When you say worn spots......do you mean worn as in the wood is cupped in those areas....or do you mean that it's lighter in color....or it's darker in color (embedded dirt)?

Any chance of pics?

I can get some pictures up. They are lighter in the worn areas.
