Recommendations for 1/2 leaking gap in shower walls

In my shower there is a 1/2 gap between the tub and the three walls. In the past I have caulked the area. Currently there is several cracks in the caulking allowing water to get behind the wall and leak into the ceiling below. The leak just began so I don't believe there is any mold or damage other than the stain. I know the solution should be to remove the tile install cement board and membrane and re tile. The other solution I may do will be to re caulk and install bull nose tile to cover the 1/2 gap. Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?

1/2" gap is very big. It looks like the tiles were poorly installed.

Your #2 idea is the more economical solution.

But here is something you can do, that is easy and cheap:

1. Clean the area well, remove old caulking, mildew, etc.
2. Get a 1/2" foam rod, cut it to the desired length, place in the gap and caulk around it. Make sure it sits snugly in the gap. This product is a filler, and is available at home centers.

The idea of the backer rod is a good one. I'd use only 100% silicone as the caulking to seal in a wet area.

Why has the tub dropped? Assuming the tiles havent risen....

Thanks DJ1. I will try that.

I don't think the tub has dropped. I just think the tile was not installed correctly when the house was built and the tiler didn't want to make additional cuts.
