Reason for Kool Seal Elastomer on roof?
Cory

What would be an indication to use Kool Seal Elastomer on a 15-year old architectural shingle roof in good condition? Is there any reason? One contractor recommended it, but a second contractor, working on a different project, called 2 local roofing companies, and neither had heard of it, or knew what is was.
Thanks!

Roof coatings are necessary in some circumstances, flat roofs, for instance, need more maintenance and attention than a hip roof. The only reason to use one on a hip roof, which is what you have as indicated by architectural shingles, would need it is in an emergency leak situation as a temporary stop gap until such time that weather permits a proper repair or reroof.

In this case, with the information provided, the only reason for it in your case is to unnecessarily remove money from your wallet. If you roof is bad enough that someone would want to use a roof coating, then it is bad enough that it needs replacement. 15 years is getting fairly long in the tooth for a composite roof, such as architectural shingles. Even though 25 and even 50 years is printed on the product label, it is the rare roof that can make it that long without some serious degradation.

You said that you had two other roofers who'd never heard of Kool Seal, what were their recommendations and opinions on your roof condition?

Always get more opinions. As in your case, what the one contractor recommended was BS based on the info you provided.

Some contractors know one trade, some know more than one trade, but none know ALL TRADES.

I know all trades- you want their phone numbers? Just kidding of course. I do know a lot but I also know who to call when I don't know and that happens a lot.

As Spruce said, Kool-seal on shingles is a patch to buy a little time with. It is not designed for application over shingles or anything like them, although it does OK for patching. It is mainly used on mobile homes which is why some roofers may not be aware of it; most other roofing is designed for other more appropriate top coatings. Whoever recommended it is not the roofer you (or anyone else) needs- find someone who will do things the right way.
