Ram Bit?

I need to take out an "S" and replace it with a p-trap on the laundry drain to stop sewer gas. The original configuration doesn't leave any room to cut out the old pipe and still have anything left to join to. Can I use a ram bit on this type of plastic pipe?

Sure, make sure the bit is the correct size, use a low speed drill with the "sissy" bar attached, go nice and straight and hold it steady. Keep checking so as not to go deeper than the hub itself or else your repair will be more than you bargained for. The new fit will not be so snug so I usually do lots of primer and a heavy coat or two of glue.
