Question regard cast iron drain

I was told by my title guy that since I have a cast iron drain for my shower, that he had to use natural stone round the drain because the cermic tile I have will have a chemical reaction with cast iron. Is this true? In his defense he does do beautiful work. Thats for help.

Re: Question regard cast iron drain

Did he set ceramic tile and then around the drain use a piece of natural stone?

I never heard of tile reacting to cast iron, but that doesn't mean it's not so.
My initial thought is he could not make a neat clean cut around the drain using ceramic, but using natural stone he could.

Can you ask him for any technical data to back up his statement?

I've never heard of that one in my 50+ years in the business. But that's not saying it isn't true. We learn something every day.

It's news to me too. But is it true? we need to research it.

Never seen a cast iron shower drain. Floor drain, yes. Galvanized pipe leading to a cast iron main, yes. The drain unit is always brass or bronze fitted to the leader pipe with a compression nut/adapter. For pretty obvious reasons, cast is not brought up into the finished space, it usually never extends beyond the floor or wall planes.
If you had a picture it would be interesting.

Casey, you haven't been around long enough. They did make cast iron shower drains that were used with lead pans.
