Put in new cabinets first or refinish hardwood floor 1st.

We are looking at remodeling our kitchen, including redesigning the cabinet layout, getting new cabinets, and refinishing the hardwood floor.

My question is, should the floor be refinished before or after the new lower cabinets are installed?

I would think refinishing the floor should happen 1st. It would be easier to sand and apply the finish without the cabinets and appliances in the way. It is not a large kitchen and has an Island that will be replaced (resized smaller). There is not a lot of room around the Island for a sanding machine.

Thanks,

Walt

let the floor refinishers worry about getting them sanded. install the uppers first, then the lowers, less the toekick. have the floors refinished then install the toekicks and the appliances. Floors being finished are always the last thing done on a jobsite minus touch up painting.

We always get the floor as finished as possible before installing the cabinets. Makes putting in the cabs and appliances a ton easier.

Do all the flooring except the last step, install everything, then finish the floor.

"Refinishing hardwood floor" has a few steps.

The sanding is very dusty. You want to do it when there are no cabinets in the kitchen. So do that first.

Next, install the cabinets: wall cabinets first, then base cabinets. Keep the toe kick out, like MLB suggested.

Then apply stain, as many coats as required. Let completely dry.

Finally install the toe kick and other base moldings.
