Re: prime the counter top hole

I've never done anything to a cut-out, other than caulk the leading edge before dropping the sink into place.

I assume you're referring to a formica top, which has a particle board back that will react like a sponge with even the slightest hint of moisture hitting it. Waxing the edge may slow things ever so slightly, but IMHO, not worth the time or effort when the inevitable leak will destroy the top anyway.

Beeswax won't do much to seal the cut against water but a couple coats of varnish would do the trick.

Im with Casey on this one. If you need to seal the edge varnish will help.....Yrs ago I knew an old time plumber that would use broken pcs of wax ring to rub on the edge. Ive never see anyone else do it except him.

He always saved pcs of wax rings for different projects. Back when I was building hot and heavy I used hammers with wood handles. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom a couple inches deep then packed the hole with the wax. This worked great when putting screws in...especially when installing cabinets....Stick the screw into the hammer handle before driving will aid in the screw going in better........
