Plumbing help needed regarding removing drain/lever. TIA!

Ok. I have a facial sponge stuck in my drain. Great right? I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the level/stopper off to snake it. There are no screws. None. It doesn't seem to want to just pop off so obviously they've got to be SOMEWHERE. There was a screw holding the actual level in place. I removed it. I thought perhaps there was a screw deep in the opening that I needed to get to but that doesn't appear to be the case.

It's driving me nuts. It's a super old tub and could use some serious advice. I tried to attach a picture but it keeps telling me the type is invalid. Any help is greatly appreciated.

can you post a link to your picture on a site like photobucket or imagebeam?

How deep in the drain is it? How big is it?

Pushing it downstream may not be the best solution.
