I have a brick paver patio. A very large Locust tree is within 10 feet. A large root has grown under the patio, raising some of the bricks. I can lift out the bricks but what is the safest thing to do to get rid of the root?
Move just outside of the porch edge and trench. Cut there. You will need to remove the raised pavers to get the root out, but you were going to reset those anyway, I guess. When backfilling, stand a metal panel between porch and tree to discourage immediate regrowth in that direction.
