I recently hired a contractor to pour concrete slabs which will be capped with flagging stone around my new gunite pool. The contractor attached rebar to the wall of the pool and ran both rebar and wire lathe through the 4" slab. He further dug a 1' footing around the outside of the patio to support the rebar and the outer portion of the slab. My concern is that there are no expansion joints in the concrete nor between the wall of the pool. The pool wall is about 12" thick. I live in the Northeast where temperatures freeze and thaw. Should there have been expansion joints? Must the footing for this slab, which projects 5-8 feet from the pool wall in each direction receive a footing below the frost line approx. 3 feet?
