Painting an old dresser & crib

I have an older dresser I would like to paint to use in my nursery for my baby boy on the way. The dresser is in good shape and the drawers work great, it’s just ugly. The dresser seems to be like a pressed particle with a finish that is supposed to look like wood. It does not seem to be a solid wood. I have been told that I can use Killz on the dresser and then paint it. What type of paint should I use? I am going to paint a used crib I have bought to match the dresser. Considering my child will be in the crib, I would like it to be safe with out paint chips. I am trying to create a nice nursery for a decent price. Can you believe they sell cribs for over $300 each??

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thank you.
