painting brass fireplace doors

I have recently been restoring a 1950's home with a double fireplace and have restored the brass fireplace doors to the best of my ability but am not all to thrilled about the results. Is there a way for me to paint them to give them similar look of powder coating without the expense ? How would I prep the surface and would a high heat Automotive or Grill paint look good. I am only looking at doing th exterior surfaces. I am wanting a flat matte black look.

Thanks
Trina

Re: painting brass fireplace doors

I recently painted the brass accents strips on my fireplace doors with RustOleum high heat bar-b-cue spray paint with good results. It is available at Home Depot.Merely scuff up the brass surface with very fine sandpaper to aid in adhesion.
