Painting 5-year old refrig / rust

Rust spots have shown up on my 7 year old refrig -- Kenmore. The all white "crinkly" finish seems "soft", almost like a vinyl coating. I'm guessing that the finish is one that I've read about as applied to the metal before it was shaped during the manufacturing process. (I discovered -- too late -- that the manufacturer suggests waxing the exterior with car wax when brand new!)

The rusting is limited to the side facing the range and the front (lower) door of the refrig portion (freezer on top). Thus, it appears that the rust is where splashes/drips have touched the surface and have not been sufficiently cleaned.

So far, I have cleaned the entire exterior of the refrig with mineral spirits then treated the spots with Jasco's Prep and Prime. I'm thinking of using Zinnser Bull's Eye 1-2-3 Primer and then Rustoleum appliance paint.

Anyone have any better ideas and/or experience with a successful remedy?
