We live in Mexico on the beach. Every two or three years we have to paint the exterior walls. Mexican painters always insist on doing two coats of paint. The paint we used is made by Comex (Mexican company) and is made for exterior walls. Recently, Homedepot has opened near Puerto Vallarta and I went there and asked them what they suggest. The advisor there told me to use the white primer as the first coat and them use there white exterior paint. The primer is much cheaper than the exterior paint.
The local painter also wash the walls before painting to remove any salt on the walls.
My question is: Is it better to use primer insteat of paint as a first base coat? I'll appreciate any comments.

yes I think so. it gives the paint something to stick to, and seals off the wall.
