old chimney remnant??

Hello, we're looking to add tall bookcases to a wall but in one of the corners there's a 'box' that is getting in the way, something enclosed within drywall/plaster. Same but smaller kind of 'box' protrudes out of the ceiling in the adjacent room too. The 'boxes' then go upstairs through both adjoining bedrooms above, full height to the ceiling. Haven't looked in the attic yet but ... I have a bad feeling about this.... could this be an old chimney remnant, removed from the basement and lower level and just left to hang in the upper level??
(sorry tried posting a picture but the uploader says my jpegs are not valid files..)

Possible, or it could be an old laundry chute or dumb waiter. Remove some of the drywall and see if it is brick (chimney) or a box (laundry chute or dumb waiter).

I can tell you that if there is no brick under it in the basement there is not a 2+ story chimney in there. You cant just take out the bottom of a chimney
