Oil based paint toxic?
Angela

I live in a house that was built in the 1960s. The trim was painted with oil based paint , so I was told to use oil based paint over it. The smell was extremely strong , so now I'm worried  it's hazardous? Can it be toxic even after the scent calms down?

Angela,

Sounds like you used very low quality paint. I have used oil based primer and paint and never had an issue with the smell.

I had them to make it at Sherwin Williams. It was $ 22 for a quart of dover white. I guess I assumed they'd give me the right paint.

Yes, that is where I get all of my paint. It used to smell bad enough that one had to keep the doors open during painting. Kind of tough when it is winter. Paint does not dry well in really cold temps.

I guess it may be what you are used to. The oil paints that we used have a slight smell of oil, but nothing bad.
