Oil and grease spots on unfinished wood

My brother and I built a beautiful all Oak, built in matching bookshelves on both sides of the fireplace in his living room. When we got done we noticed small oil and grease stains scattered all over it. Now, I knew about this problem before we got started and we tried to keep our hands clean while we were working on it, but inevitably it still got stains. Before we stain it with a honey oak stain, we would like to remove these spots if possible. I've read through many of the Q&A archive questions, and I see techniques like using baking soda, oxygenated bleach, mineral spirits, but I don't see anything that specifically refers to removing grease and oils stains from unfinished wood prior to staining. My first gut instinct tells me to throw some baking soda on the spots and leave it for a day, then sand it. But I would like to hear what the experts would do in this situation.
